How to Prepare Matcha

Matcha is a powdered green tea made from shade-grown leaves called tencha. You whisk the powder into water instead of steeping leaves and removing them. A bowl, bamboo whisk, and a measured amount of matcha help make the preparation easy to repeat.

How to prepare Art of Tea Ceremonial Grade Matcha

The method below follows the preparation instructions shown with our Ceremonial Grade Matcha Tin. Follow the directions for your specific product when preparing a different matcha.

  1. Sift 1 teaspoon of matcha into a bowl. Sifting helps break up clumps before you add water.
  2. Add 2 ounces of hot water at around 175°F. A temperature-controlled kettle or thermometer helps you check the water temperature.
  3. Whisk in a quick W-shaped motion. Use a bamboo whisk, or chasen, and whisk until the matcha is smooth and frothy.
  4. Finish your drink. Add more hot water to taste, or pour the prepared matcha over milk for a matcha latte.
  5. Sip and enjoy. Adjust the final amount of water or milk to suit the drink you like.

This recipe uses a measured teaspoon. It does not assume that a teaspoon equals a particular weight in grams.
