Turmeric 101 + Why We Love it at Art of Tea

Turmeric, also known as “the golden spice” has become incredibly popular in recent years.  You’ll find it anywhere from supplements to smoothies to tea, but most people don’t know the rich history behind this spice. With that, we invite you to learn more about turmeric and see why we love adding it to our blends.

Turmeric originated in India, and to this day, it is extremely significant in Indian culture.

Turmeric has been a core part of Ayurvedic medicine since 500 BCE. Ayurveda, which translates to “the science of life,” is an ancient Indian system of natural healing. Our CEO and founder, Steve Schwartz, uses Ayurveda in his tea blending process, so this particular aspect of turmeric is near and dear to us.

Culturally, turmeric is regarded as auspicious, and the golden spice is a big part of Indian wedding traditions to bring good luck to the newlyweds and to ward off any evil spirits. It’s also a huge component of Indian cuisine, lending curries their bright colors and warm flavors. You might also find people in India using it as a dyeing agent due to the distinctive yellow hue that it leaves on clothes and skin alike.

As a homage to the beautiful golden spice, we’ve compiled a list of why we love turmeric (and you should too!):

  • It has been known to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties
  • It may protect your body from free radicals
  • It may help prevent and treat a multitude of ailments
  • It’s known as a natural mood-booster
  • It stimulates warmth in the body
  • It may help wake you up without any caffeine
  • It’s delicious at any time of the day
