Finding the Perfect Tea for Your Mood

Drinking tea is proven to have a positive effect on your wellbeing. A 2013 study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that "tea consumption has acute benefits on both mood and performance." There are many varieties of tea, and each type is known to help with a specific mood. Here is a list to help you find a tea that matches how you are feeling!

Tired

If you are feeling tired after spending long days at work, you need tea to keep you awake and focused. Fortunately, black tea, green tea, and matcha all naturally contain caffeine. These three varieties of tea all come from the Camellia sinensis plant, an evergreen shrub that grows primarily in the mountainous areas of China and India. The level of caffeine in these varieties differ based on how the tea leaf is harvested, treated, and dried.

  • Black tea has the highest amount of caffeine out of these varieties. The Mayo Clinic estimates that its percentage of caffeine ranges from around 25-48 mg. Generally stronger in flavor, black tea is sure to get you out of bed in the morning and stay focused throughout your day.
  • Green tea has slightly less caffeine than black tea, around 25-29 mg. Giving you a little boost if you are feeling uninspired, green tea is sure to help motivate you and prevent tiredness.
  • Matcha has more caffeine than green tea. It is notable for being fresh and aromatic, often with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Matcha is another great way to help yourself feel more awake, while also indulging in its full-bodied flavor.
Anxious or Sad

If you are feeling anxious or sad, choose teas without caffeine that have calming effects. Both chamomile and dessert teas are shown to have soothing effects that help counteract mild anxiety and insomnia.

  • Chamomile has a long history of medicinal use. In the past, it was regularly used to help treat sleeplessness and was used topically for inflammatory skin conditions. In 2017, the University of Pennsylvania released a study that stated that chamomile extract was often effective in treating anxiety. Similarly, chamomile tea has long been used for its calming properties, helping to both ease the mind and soothe the soul.
  • Dessert tea is also a great way to improve your mood. Dessert teas often come with caffeine-free varieties and taste like your favorite desserts. Flavors like dark chocolate peppermint, caramelized pear, and vanilla berry truffle are sure to help put a smile on your face.

If you're in a good mood, why not celebrate with a fruity iced tea? Flavors like passionfruit jasminehibiscus, and green pomegranate tea all evoke the summer months with bold and brisk taste!
